The reason XY and ORAS ran like shit is because the models have ridiculous polycounts, to a point where they'll still look good several generations later on another handheld. They were planning ahead to prevent the aforementioned modelling.
You're right about the animations, they could have at least used the Amie Animations for Gliders since I highly doubt Sky Battles are returning.
