remoraid's whole body kiiiind of looks like a gun... octillery only has a tube on it's face. if they wanted to make a canon a shark or a big fish would have been a better idea.

While the idea of a fish evolving into an octopus doesn't make sense and does seem pretty silly, their concept is actually pretty interesting since it's based around the evolution of real life weaponry going from revolvers to tanks.

A remora is a kind of fish which has what amounts to a suction cup on its head. It attaches to the underside of other sea life. That's why mantine sprites had remora under their wings. Octopus, of course, have tentacles covered in suction cups. Both are marine animals that cling to things in the same way, so it's not JUST gun -> turret but also thematically linked by that.
