I know that most Pokemon fans don't generally HAVE friends, but friends being hostile and antagonizing each other for kicks is very common.

This. Gary is made an ass in the tv show, but compared to other rivals he's pretty much what id expect a childhood friend to act like. Its weird when the rivals are overly nice cause then it feela like you never become friends. Imo their is ribably some weird cutural jpanese aspect to all the rivals too.
