Yes, but I don't think it will stick. It already seems like people are sick of hearing about it. As people start getting into the later levels and the grind becomes real, they'll just get sick of playing and stop.

Happy to see Pokémon being this active. Kids, Teens, Adults and even old people are playing.

But I think half of the playerbase will quit when they put anything after Gen 2, and I'm really being optimistic here. This audience will not try "catching them all" with more that 251, or anything more than that. Also it will become a pain to evolve pokémon. So for me GO it's just a fad.

Hope that I'm wrong though. It would be great if more people got in the main games, and also looked at anything past gen 1 pokémon with a "hey, they're not bad" attitude, but genwunners are blind and they're the majority right now, so eh.

Having been to a Pokémon GO meetup this evening, I doubt it'll last.
About 90% of players really are the people who not only don't play the new games, but actively brag about how much they hate the new games. As soon as the GO hype runs out (which I don't expect to be more than six months or so), the sales of the regular games will be what they've always been.

It's still one of the most consistently well-selling series, to be fair.

I do hope the hype remains though. I dont think the game would be as fun with only a few amount of players.
I love getting into the game and see that someone has taken over the gym near me. Then a few hours later another team takes it.. This only happening once a week would get boring.

They will always be the majority. That's the gen that were the right age for Pokemania.

I was one of them, but decided to buy Y/Alpha Sapphire and the new mons aren't bad honestly.. I've seen the truth. But I'm the minority here. Most people will indeed drop it after Gen 2. It would just be too many mons for them to catch.

How old are Hoennbabies now? They're probably a good chunk of the current fanbase too, though not nearly as many as Genwunners.

I'm not even sure they like pokemon at all. Go seems more liked because it's popular, not because of its content.

Point out its flaws and they freak out to defend it with complete bullshit. Try to talk about pokemon and they start ridiculing. Then they turn around pretending to be 'fans'.

New content might help it sustain players but this popularity and hype will drop off hard.

This seems to be a sentiment I've seen expressed on /v/. For some reason there are people who think playing games on a phone in public is fine, but playing games on a 3ds in public make you a manbaby. Sure this is probably just trolling, but I find it perplexing nonetheless.

The early gens of pokemon read like a loose mythological fable, with the legendary birds -> lugia (their leader) -> legendary dogs -> rayquaza (a dragon, and the end all be all of pokemon power); then there were god pokemon who could control all time and space and creation and they had like multiple forms and it just seems dumb to me.

Pokemon as simple and brilliant as Arcanine, Zapdos, Haunter, Raiku, Typhlosion, and Yanmega (aka Good butterfree) are so much better than things like arceas and deoxys to me.

not battle-wise; design choice wise. Yanmega stands out in gen4 as a well designed pokemon - which is why I likened it as a better designed butterfree.

The gens needed to be for expanding pokemon type combination diversity and for expanding the design space for interesting things. Not creating god pokemon.

Gen IV has a lot of stupid things going for it; like god pokemon. An exception to this rule is Yanmega.

Other 'ordinary' pokemon that are exceptions and are consistent with the universe that fit in the Gen one design space are the gen4 starters, bidoof, abamasnow, and wevile.

While manaphy, phione, arceas, regigigas, dialga, and palkia are all weird, and inconsistent with the universe. And they don't have a consistent design space. The complaint that they more resemble digimon or YGO monsters is valid at this point.
