It's like they know they're the underdog so when they shit talk it's pretty much just playful tongue in cheek.
Had an Instinct in San Francisco the other day telling me how all two of him were going turn the city Yellow eventually. He was pretty bro and was the only one chatting up with people at the Lure I stayed at. Wanted to try and join up with him since he was just catching pokemon instead of challenging gyms and he was rolling solo as well but I was far too shy.
