Magikarp and Gyarados are based off an old Chinese story. There was a fish couldn't get up a waterfall. In order to overcome this, it eats birds until it grows wings, then flies up to the top of the waterfall, at which point it is eaten by a bird. The most common type for a legendary is Psychic. All generations except for gen 6 have introduced at least two Psychic-type legendaries - this holds true for gen 7 too, already. Gen 6 still introduced Hoopa, too, anyway.

There is nothing Dragon about Yanmega other than its species' English name. No other languages refer to them as "dragons" of any sorts. It would probably be part Dragon if "ryu" was in the Japanese name, like Mega Ampharos.

I can't believe the introduction of fairy didn't make Skitty or Delcatty Normal/Fairy at the MOST. Delcatty is such an elegant design and it has a fun movepool to dig through and it's so so so bad in battle, Normalize didn't help it, Wonder Skin helps but ugh.

They made Snubbull/Granbull pure Fairy (to be fair it was always the Fairy Pokemon?) and gave the Wigglytuff line Normal/Fairy, wtf gives with Skitty and Delcatty? They're pink and girly and fit the part, they evolve with moon stones and everything.

toxicroak and croagunk are basically gf regretting not being able to make a 3type pokemon. The poison frog and the dirty boxer themes makes Fighting, Poison, and Dark all equally valid types and their moveset is actually more dark than anything. It would almost be a clever counter for it's glaring Psychic weakness if they weren't so slow compared to most popular Psychic types.

Groudon and Kyogre are supposed to reflect the Earth/Sea dichotomy in Gen III. Groudon is literally a representation of the Earth, why would it not be pure Ground-type? Adding fire would make no sense.

It shouldn't have been colored red though, but then pokemon design went to hell in Gen IV+
