Gen1 is my favorite but Gen5 is a close second. Consistently fun designs, really low amount of shitty cave fodder, some of my favorite mons in the entire series.

That being said, I hate the art of Gen6 and what I've seen of 7 minus Pikaboo. Not necessarily the Pokemon designs, because I think a lot of them have potential, but I just don't like the art style. Everything has become super cartoony and childish, even designs that aren't necessarily new, like the difference in trainer art or even the execution of the 3D Pokemon models. I think in the hands of another artist, a lot of the Gen6/7 basic designs would look way better.

Besides, aren't most of the monsters in YW derived from folklore? Most depictions of yokai are pretty goofy and grotesque, so those designs seem consistent with that.
