Added features plus traditional theme I think. Every generation later looked like a copy of Gen 1 and didn't try to innovate as much as Gen 2 did.

Gen II took something *almost* perfect and made it perfect. 251 Pokémon was just enough to give the game a lifespan without feeling overbearing, it added a few more game mechanics to improve gameplay. It felt like a slightly more believable world, with the Lake of Rage, the metro, the Burned tower story etc. It is, for me, the quintessential handheld game.

You could actually complete the pokedex without needing to buy ten games, use banks, etc. Every gen they offer less obtainable Pokémon in the game itself to force you to buy more of their shit. Gen 2 is definitely the one I remember most fondly. It was just Gen 1 but better. It looked better, sounded better, there were more Pokemon, it was fucking rad.

Gen 5 and Gen 2 are the best. They both were innovate generations, had stories with some sort of longer continuity that the others, characters that were actually interesting (Silver and N), lots of post E4 content, and had some of the biggest OH SHIT moments in the series

gen III is """objectively""" the best generation, due to what it brought to the mechanical side of things, the perfect mixture of old and new pokemon and most significantly, the battle frontier
counting sidegames and spinoffs, colosseum and XD were an interesting take on the series and FR/LG were competent remakes, if lacking compared to the glory of HG/SS
