They didnt get the rights to use pokemon and reskin ingress.. Ingress was always meant to be the alpha data collection for P:GO.
Ever since it started, it was obvious its real function was to gather user-submitted locations and test some of the gaming mechanics to iron out an app like this. Notice how P:GO doesnt have the ability to submit new locations.. The whole point of ingress was to establish these.. let people submit or dispute them, get it stable, then use this for a new game that wasnt so in-development.
Honestly, i wanted something new.. Everyone knew this but i was hoping itd go to an original property; not pokemon. They didnt just reskin it without some tweaks to make it less competitive; no more bombing points and defending.. just passive gym things and the battles are very much a small part of the gameplay.. They took into account that people can walk around where there arent stops, still do stuff if on mass transit or passenger, so on..
I think with the app being shit... maybe there was a deadline, a staff that wasnt ready to deal with all aspects, or some higher-up played an alpha version of the P:GO reskin and determined it was good to go ASAP.. Maybe they were still ironing out problems with ingress and pushed P:GO until it was too late and they rushed it.. Iunno.. shame cuz its such a bad functioning app that the only thing good about it is the property of pokemon
