Is it safe to say that the anime for the franchise is the real reason Pokemon became a worldwide phenomenon?

Obviously the games have been the money machine but the anime has been responsible for the marketing, making Pikachu the face of the franchise and merchandise sales.

it's obviously a combination of the show, game, and cards, plus all the other related merch capitalizing on the success of the first three, that have made Pokemon a worldwide phenomenon. It's simply the most effective cross-media marketing strategy in history.

Digimon had the games and TV, but the cards were an afterthought. Yugioh had the cards and TV, but the games were just poor attempts at aping the card game until it was too late and the bubble had passed.

What the fuck else are you supposed to do when you're making a video game based on a cartoon about a card game?

I know they made a few video games that did other shit, but they were fairly rare.
