First of all, /vp/ loves "badass" looking starters and hates feminine/cute designs. This is why Greninja, Charizard and Feraligatr are pretty much fan favorites here while Delphox and Meganium are hated.
Second, /vp/ also loves competitive viability. This lowers the score of Meganium and Delphox even further while also being the reason why Samurott gets so much shit. Most people actually hated Greninja before XY release but started to love it when they found out that it has an OP Hidden Ability. Serperior also got a lot of shit before Contrary was released, then its popularity suddenly spiked.
Personally, I really like Meganium. It's definitely my favorite Gen II starter (which isn't saying much since Typhlosion and Feraligatr are both mediocre) and I love using it in-game. Sure Grass is quite poor typing to have in Johto, but it isn't as much of an issue as people claim it to be. Grass STAB, Body Slam, Earthquake and Synthesis is all you need, but it can also do stuff like screens and powders, and an early access to Razor Leaf is really good for beating early-game trainers. Good design and a very fun and underrated Pokemon.
