It's your first fight against a fully-evolved competitively strong Pokemon, AND it outlevels you, AND it shits on the Pokemon you might have caught to fight it - Pikachu and Bellsprout. Bellsprout lost like 40 points of base special defense after Gen I, so it dies like a bitch despite the type matchup and apparently nobody thought twice about what players were actually supposed to turn to with that option having been completely sodomized.
So what were your other options, level the Magikarp into Gyarados, or time travel back to when you had access to Mount Moon so you could get a fucking Paras? Nah let's just grind the shit out of the Charmeleon I guess.
