The problem is they've written themselves into a corner of sorts. Kids worship Ash Greninja over there. Getting rid of Greninja with the rest of his party, as per tradition, would be just as bad as getting rid of Ash himself at this point. Unless they feel like keeping Greninja around as well, they might as well finally retire Ash while they're at it.

Because they've never been given any other choice. If they changed the protagonist it might turn some kids off, but then the next generation will come in having never known anything else.

That is, unfortunately, also true. As I doubt Ash will ever leave, I could see them pulling an early Johto where he brought Charizard along and shitstomped everything in his path for awhile before realizing (again) that that isn't much fun. I almost wonder if they wouldn't turn Greninja into a "second Pikachu", where he keeps him around even if he's technically benched. Of course, that would mean Ash would be limited to four Alolan Pokemon unless he decided to rotate them in and out as needed like in BW.

All Celebi has is giant evil onion fairy going apeshit on trees, then it dies and comes back. It's unbelievably dull and didn't even come with a US Celebi distribution. I was mad as shit when I scanned that promo card and it just gave me an animation. Fuck that noise.

When there's kid films (including Dorry) back-to-back overcrowding the market, yes. They will probably just wait for a DVD release.

The movie would do fine in theaters if it was advertised for some other part of the year. The irony is that anything pokemon-related for the next month or two should be benefiting from GO's global popularity and outdoing last year's mediocre film, but the game is still not out in Japan yet so it gave the movie no such boost.
