The biggest thing is that footstep tracking is literally broken right now. Everything is always 3 steps so you will be unable to play the game normally until it's fixed.
Scanning also lets you know where to go, so you can plan out your walks better and not wander around aimlessly or in circles looking like a total autist. It also lets you get to locations before things time out, making your walks more rewarding as opposed to wandering for 10 minutes and finding nothing. You can also know when to run to a location to catch something before it despawns as well.
Overall, I think it's a good thing for the game.

Now download the PokemonGo-Map zip. AFAIK, OS X should automatically extract it for you. Now find the requirements.txt file and copy its file path.
Go back to the terminal. Type pip install -r "FILEPATH"
Replace FILEPATH with the path you copied earlier, then press Enter. (Leave the quotes in there)
