They've been safe up until now to fuck around with their console gimmicks as Nintendo's handhelds held up well enough to offset the recent failure of the Wii U.
Next generation is going to be do or die because if the NX tanks Nintendo will be up against the mobile industry and honestly, as much as I like Nintendo and have had over 20 years of faith in them, they don't stand a chance on that front.
