Wrong, not only would it have a Godzilla (2014) effect but it ironically wouldn't fit the tone of the Pokemon franchise if they went full on exposition and lore dump.
Plus I don't think they would want to spend that much money on the movie and that idea would involve a hell of a lot of CG.

Remember, this is a child's movie.

This is literally the best idea for a Pokemon movie
>Pikachu is front and center
>sells toys and pervy personality makes adults laugh
>easy story that can nicely fit a single movie
>the other Pokemon involved can be the most popular ones/the ones they want to sell without being tied to a specific region or generation

>buddy cop action comedy sells to pretty much every target, regardless of age and gender

Legendary knows their shit, adapting a main game would have meant angry fans because of the amount of stuff they need to cut (most of the gym battles, for example, think of origin) plus angry normies because. well, most Pokemon games simply do not have such a great plot to begin with. They would make rushed, boring movie, and probably the budget would skyrocket with all the battles and stuff. Detective Pikachu, meanwhile, is easy to make and infinitable more marketable. This is easily the best possible outcome linked with the concept of Pokemon live action movie.

Dude come on, the monster fights were cool but when they happened they were either in an extremely dark environment or they didn't do fuck all.

I really wouldn't call "something that doesn't happen in the games" as filler. Filler essentially is something to pad the narrative, not necessarily because "it doesn't follow". If it's important to the narrative, even if it doesn't happen to the games, it's not filler.

With that said the early anime even up to BW was worse with that regard.

Honestly, the film makers kind of have their hands tied if they wanted to make some sort of adaptation of one of the games. We don't need a live action recreation of Mewtwo's flick, Gold/Silver is painfully boring, Ruby/Sapphire could be decent.

If they had any sense at all, they'd do a live action film revolving around an entirely new character, one who isn't completely obnoxious. Let him go up against Team Rocket, have Giovanni be the main villain, it could be great.

Legendary pictures are the ones behind Trick R Treat and Krampus right?

I have some hope for this detective pikachu movie.

Weirdly enough, I'm surprised they've even heard of the game since it's Japan only and barely anyone talks about it.

Hopefully this movie decision helps in its localization and making of a sequel.

I can only wonder though, what if someone else won the rights to the live action movie. Would we get something on Ash? An OC? Someone from the games? Anything could have happened.

Back to Legendary: what they, imo, have been pretty good so far is in delivering to the fans, in my experience at least. I felt like a kid with all the birthday gifts he ever wanted when I went to see Jurassic World, whatever you guys' opinion on that movie is. I can only hope for them to deliver in the same way with Pokémon.
But it's fucking Detective Pikachu, not much to expect. So hey, at least get a good story for it and make sure you don't flip the finger to the fans in the process.

But why for christ sake, most of them have a terrible plot and wouldn't make good movies anyway..who wants to see supercuts of gym battles while waiting for the final showdown? RPG don't make for good movies. Detective Pikachu is way easier to make a movie into, and you can reach a broader audience (plus this way all the other pokemon involved can be the usual Gardevoir/Lucario/Greninja/Charizard, Nintendo sells more toys and everyone is happy), plus they can really make a good movie. Legendary isn't half bad to begin with, this could have gone a lot worse. It's actually smart.

While it is a good idea from a writing standpoint, I don't feel it's that good on a marketing standpoint. Let's be real, here. People would want to watch this for it's association to the game series, and THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE GAMES WHATSOEVER. It misrepresents what it stands for. Not to mention that the only thing it DOES represent is a game that no one liked. Maybe none of these is their goal, but it's still what people expect. It still has to have the name Pokemon stamped on it, so it has to represent what that is. On that matter, to even do anything remotely like this would suggest, that stupid style guide would have to be ignored.

Stop being so dense, this is a movie made from one of the biggest IP in the world from one of the biggest studios distributed by one of the biggest distributor, the goal is to reach an audience as wide as possible, so the simple the better.
It's really simple:

>let's say RGBY
>this means no pokemon over the first 151
>a lot of location to shoot
>a lot of CG because, well, battles
>since summer movies rarely go over the 2 hours, they'll need to severely cut the plot
>but, after all, RGBY has barely any plot to begin with, it's literally just go and collect badges while randomly fight a vaguely defined Team Rocket without a proper plan or motive
>there's no place in the game for 8 gym battles and 4 elite battle and champion battle
>load of actors
>angry fans because they "ruined the games"
>angry moviegoers because the film sucks

Meanwhile, for Detective Pikachu movie
>the most recognisable pokemon of all is front and center
>easy plot to work in 2 hours, understandable for both kids and adults
>all in one city, so less locations and less actors
>fewer battles, so less CG
>they can choose which pokemon to put in, so they can pick amongst the most popular
>pervy pikachu makes adults laugh

Good point. Nintendo has made something right for once, again, I know that movie taken from videogames usually sucks but this is really the best possible outcome linked for a pokemon game. If the writing is smart and funny, the CG believable and the movie isn't too dense, this could be a great, wide success, if it's not..well it's just a spinoff to begin with, they've got themselves covered. Because the quest to become a pokemon master is too fucking long to adapt into a pokemon movie in any shapes, because making CG battle would cost a lot of money and attract a lot of controversy. Also such a serious plot/goal makes for a dense movie, as dense are the games, which have barely any humour at all. To sell a half cg / half real actors movie about bright coloured monsters with strange powers, they need to make it as simple, fun and cheap as possible.

It would not be hard at all to show a trainer having Pokemon battles. They could even throw a rival character in for dramatic tension.

I'm so glad it's not an adaption of the main games or anime, Detective Pikachu is probably the best possible route they could've gone with it.

Expect the movie to be filled with mostly Gen 1 Pokemon aside from the occasional Lucario since they're obviously the most marketable ones thanks to the success of Pokemon Go.
