Bugs are not bound to a pallete of colors like a lot of types, so it can be creative that way.
Bugs are always based on an animal since it's in the name of it, so their designs never fall for the terrible "it's an object!" idea, or ends up being a big blob of nothing like normal types, so the desgins are always somewhat natural
Bugs as a group of animals is incredibly varied, filled with crazy stuff, so they hardly need to change or "spice it up" too much with them, hell, cutiefly is just a beefly, and yet looks like a fictional creature.
It's honestly the easiest type to make cool pokemon, gen5 just took advantage of that.
