Dug it out a few years ago after I had gotten back into Pokémon via HG and loved it. It's actually somewhat challenging, with strong, memorable bosses whose teams are built around solid strategies, and it's got quite a few battles rivalling Ghetsis and Cynthia.
However wonky the models and the landscape might look, the authentic scale during battle and the nicely gritty atmosphere make up for it. Music's great too.
XD is okay too. It's much more refined in every way, and the Battle CDs are top tier, but at the same time it's easier and less atmospheric.
