Believe it or not, once upon a time, the games didn't shower you in items and money, and you had to actually consider whether it was best to use them in battle (and risk taking another hit), or use them in the overworld when it might be too late (and if you think it's easy to get to a Pokecentre, good luck re-traversing Silph Co).
