It's infamous for the number of removal of features such as day/night as an example
It's physically impossible to "catch Em' all!" Until Emerald even then it's the hardest games to do so. Also only having SOME Kanto mon's, and not all of them and having to wait like 2 years for them
All the fucking HM's Johto never needed like any HM's asides from 1/2 spots
Lack of backwards compatibility. I really don't think you understand how crushed people were when we figured out our Pokemon in Gen 1/2 will be forever stuck there with no future. It was pretty sad.
It started a whole save the world plot, which took away from the being a faceless nobody, when you have an actual good with team trying to destroy the world. That one is a more personal complaint
That's a brief summary, some of it IS bias and it was the end of Pokemania
