Humans in the Pokemon universe are technically Pokemon. In the games, or at least in Sinnoh, humans are descended from Pokemon. Sort of unrelated, but in the Pokémon Adventures manga for the FR/LG arc, Giovanni had met and extracted DNA from Deoxys to clone him. However, not unlike the process creating Mewtwo, he added a strand of Red's DNA. This created a Deoxys that was able to communicate and (iirc) for tell Red's actions. This also made Red his de facto father, in a manner of apeaking.

Maybe. It makes me wonder what kind of past the people at the Pokemon Company have had and if that somehow affected the games.

The main characters' dads are all salarymen. There literally just off at work all the time and only come home rarely. Japanese kids inately understood this because that's how Japanese households worked for decades. Hell, technically speaking, that's what Norman is doing; he's at his job all day and night.
