I think they're trying to point out more the fact that in the movie, the three burds were constantly attacking each other and being asshats towards each other for reasons no one understands in the current day. They're legit saying that we've become the very thing the three burds were like in the movie: Always trying to one-up each other, attacking the other two because of both the mentality of needing to be on top, and because of old quarrels and grudges with each other and other sites/people/ect. that the newfags of today have no idea about. With all of this causing damages, harm and fug knows whatever else to both others not even involved in the event, to each other, and to the land around us in various dumb ways.
In other words, Niantic is trying to get you all to realize that if not careful, you're going to become just like the very burds that almost destroyed the world itself because of losing yourself into this need to beat, to DESTROY the other two teams. So yeah, calm down the competitive autism lads before you get us all killed, alright? That goes for ALL three teams.
