For in game you're given absolutely godly Pokemon before the half way point even Zebstrika and Stoutland can demolish the majority of Gyms without effort especially with Zebstrika's speed.
Then there's Drilbur which can be found before the second gym, Sawk, Petilil after the second, Darumaka, Sandile, Scraggy, Sigilyph all Pokemon found before the fourth gym that can evolve into powerful Pokemon relatively early with a wide array of types to take advantage of.
Not to mention you can grind Audino for quick levels.

Thinking about it, it's pretty amazing how they made Unova difficult while giving you some of these great Pokemon.
