I worked on one once, 'fix this mon' type deal
And when you zoom in, you see that the connections between two different shaded areas are really just separated by a line that is color of a mix between the two areas it's connecting
You can see it clearly on the horse, where the shaded underside meets the side under the dread lock
The whole picture is just black lines and soft lines, and filled-in areas, touched up with some highlights here and there
