How do you guys plan your teams? According to stats or just use pokemon you think are cool regardless of shitty stats? Or do you plan your teams at all?

I don't plan teams but I try my best to make sure my teams have a good type variety. Throughout my X run I boxed Vivillon for Skitty, Combusken for Honedge and then Skitty for Snubbull.

I catch mons I like and switch the under leveled ones for higher leveled ones. I get some mons to have type advantage over gyms too.

My current play through is a gym team. They're all fighting types with various other types for coverage. My main team however has type coverage across the board and decent stats.

Depends if you mean for the campaign or for multiplayer.
For the campaign I start by picking Pokemon I can get through the game that really interest me, so long as I don't create a glaring weakness. Any replays of the game or remakes I try to use new Pokemon so long as I don't outright hate them

For multiplayer I tend to build a core out of my favorites and patch any lack of roles or type coverage with other Pokemon I like.
Though my last team I built intentionally to be overused, so I started with a mega I wanted to use from my faves, built a core around it, and then filled in the rest so I'd be best covered against all the common threats

Either way I never use something I don't like the design of.

I mostly plan my teams based on design, and they generally always include:

>a Starter part of a Grass-Fire-Water triangle
>a Flyer
>a Ground-type/Earthquake user
>a Ghost or Psychic-type or one that can uses attacks of these types
>an Electric type or one that can uses attacks of this type

Note that some Pokémon can have several roles.

I go by What Pokemon I haven't already used. There's no Pokemon that I dislike, so everything is fair game. If I've used it before in another game though, that Pokemon will drop to the bottom of the list.

I do also keep in mind their types and prefer not to have overlap, and Pokemon that don't evolve are usually less of a priority than ones who do simply because they can get boring fast.

I've found a lot of unexpected favourites this way just by being open minded.

I've started doing this too, been replaying old games to kill time until November and it's been fun trying out new 'mons I never used before. I did a Platinum run a few months back using Raichu, Gastrodon, Abomasnow, and Infernape for the first time, and it was a blast. Then recently I wrapped up FireRed trying out Primeape, Electabuzz, Dodrio, Flareon, Golduck, and Aerodactyl, as well as boxing my starter for the first time.

For FireRed I Googled what teams people usually used and picked out 'mons that I found interesting and hadn't used before (and didn't have shit learnsets). I actually kind of want to restart a Gen 2 game soon and am open to ideas for an unconventional team

With XY running four pokemon in the Elite Four, I've started doing that, to at least make it somewhat of a challenge.

Generally, I follow this format:
1. Starter
2. A dragon
3. A canine
4. A burd

Then, my last two slots are HM slaves that I never use in battle.
5. HM Slave - Surf/Waterfall/Dive/Whirlpool/Defig
6. HM Slave - Cut/Strength/Rock Smash/Rock Climb

In XY, I just ran with the mons you were given. So 2 starters, fossil, and Lucario. Free Lapras was water HM slave, and Linoone was the true HM slut
