Some 48-hours ago two new exploits have been released that allow any version of the 3ds(new/old/2ds/xl) on any firmware (yes, including 11.0), to run homebrew. This means you can for example start dumping your save files, edit them with PkHex to inject new pokemon and then reinject the savefile in your cartridge. This post explains how to do this.
This method cannot brick your DS.
