A lot of the Yokai designs only made sense in Japanese culture. Pokemon has a more broad appeal since most of them are animals and animals are understood by everyone.

Not true. I work at a preschool and after school care center and plenty of kids that go there still like all that stuff. Sure, the older ones are into shooters and way more have tablets or phones than handhelds, but kids still like Pokemon.

That being said I've only gotten a few of my friends to play, the main argument is "its a pokemon knock off" which is as true as Shin Megami except in the opposite direction. Maybe once 2 comes out which is more like the anime that I've gotten some friends into it'll pick up more.

This is the song that plays at the start of Pikachu's Vacation in Japan. The localizers were smart enough to know that Pokemon's target demographic in America is a few years older than it is in Japan, so a song like this wasn't gonna fly. It got replaced with a less childish-sounding pop song that wasn't going to immediately embarrass every 10 year old in the theater. It was a smart call on their part and reflects the marketing as a whole. Pokemon like Clefairy appeared on far less merchandise in the states than Japan, while Pokemon like Gengar were played up.

Meanwhile, Yo-kai Watch couldn't comprehend that something like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-gpCkikNIw (the first result when searching "Yo-kai watch" on Youtube) was going to immediately scare away anyone older than 8.

I think it needs more time to boil. I've been into Youkai Watch for a while now with the model kits but I've just started watching the anime (dubbed) and looking at all the toys... and it's actually really cool.

Also this >>27435636 is very true.

I really hope Youkai Watch can continue to succeed because it's really quite cool. It doesn't take itself too seriously, unlike Pokemon, and it's quirky, child-friendly fun at its best.

Digimon and Pokemon are barely alike other than "we both have monsters". Digimon started as Tamagatchis for boys because the demographic between boys and girls buying Tamagatchis didn't sit well with Bandai. Digimon is like Transformers, because Bandai is like Japan's Hasbro, it's a toy company first. The anime are just 30 minute commercials to promote merchandise. Pokemon is self contained because it always has been a video game first and foremost, the rest is just to please people who like merchandise and promotional cartoons.

It didn't, YW has gigabytes to work with and Digimon barely had megabytes at the time.

Hell pokemon is an indicator of how much you can fit on to a 3DS cart and it isn't even near the max. To add insult to injury YW doesn't even have as much monsters.

There's also the fact that most Digimon get their origins from toys, anime, and card games, with video games contributing the least.

Also what specifically are you talking about? An early video game, or the Tamagotchi? Of course they wouldn't have any space on a Tamagotchi, it's not even a video game, it's a software toy.

Your argument makes no sense. You're saying that Level-5 has said the series is over (which may or may not be true - I couldn't find any such information but I may have missed it, so you should post a source on that), but that, specifically, they're done with it in Japan. Even if that is the case, they still have PLENTY of material to work with for the west, and as far as I've seen, they're only starting to promote it more and more, so I doubt they'll be dropping it any time soon.

Yokai Watch has 600 in three years because it doesn't take long to recolor the same monster over and over again.

To be fair, they have refined the battle system a lot, ESPECIALLY in Youkai Watch 3. I agree that the battle system isn't as good as Pokemon, but the games are still good, battle system aside.

Yes, what you are saying is true, but the post I originally replied to was essentially saying that Youkai Watch having fewer creatures than Pokemon was a bad thing, and I was pointing out that actually, they have made more in a shorter amount of time.

I never said whether that was a good or bad thing, nor that they didn't take shortcuts, if you will, to get there. I simply pointed out that after three years, Youkai Watch has more creatures than Pokemon had after three years. I'm not sure why it's so hard for people to understand this and not go off on a tangent, reading into things that weren't there and putting words into my mouth, so to speak.

Thanks for letting me know. Still, that isn't "the end", and Level-5 are ramping up production on several other games right now. Besides, they only JUST released Youkai Watch 3 and a batch of new toys. I'm sure we'll see at least SOMETHING new before the end of the year.

I'd say that battling isn't the core mechanic of Youkai Watch whereas it's much more integral to Pokemon. You can debate that - that's fine - but from my perspective, it isn't as important that the Youkai Watch battle system is as robust as the Pokemon battle system. It would be nice if it was but it's not the end of the world.

Besides, there's always Youkai Watch Busters. I really hope the Busters games get localised.

For one no one said it was a bad thing to have less pokemon. That said when you have more recolors than original designs that certainly is a problem.

Secondly the argument was about YW being limited by hardware in comparison to Digimon on the ps1 when YW isn't nearing the limit at all and Pokémon even exceeds the size of YW without nearing the max.

As for the insult part, GF can manage more than level 5 who are just recreating yokai in a cartoon style.

Then theres the fact that YW is padded as fuck, I'm pretty sure that the mascot has about 13 recolors to itself. You can't compare 600 monsters with a majority of recolors to one that's all original designs.
