Kanto's had this 'oh shit' feeling to them, and had the gumption to match. Misty, Lt. Surge and Sabrina are all pretty rough fights.

and yes, Kalos gyms are all sorts of easy, but the music makes me feel that the leaders are judging more than just your pokemon's power. How you hold yourself in a rough situation, if you treat your weaker pokemon well, etc.
course I have headcanon, for example if you use a turn to revive a fallen mon while sacrificing another one, the gym leader will send out his/her ace next and wipe the floor with you because they don't like people who do that. Kalos' gym theme best reflects that
