I didn't know how to use the stones back in R/B, until way later on. Poliwhirl was my best Pokemon though, he was really overleveled and killed everything it wasn't weak to with Bubblebeam. Eventually I figured out how to evolve him but was disappointed by what was practically less cute Poliwhirl. Not to mention his Special stat was even lower so Water moves became weak for him. Something about Poliwrath isn't impressive at all but I loved the hell out of Poliwhirl. (I still have a plushie keychain of him)
