I don't mind the friendly rivals, but I'd like a jerk rival back. They ought to have a Gary-type personality as your main rival, picks the starter yours is weak to, etc. and also a 'friendly' rival ala Hau, who picks the one yours is strong to and generally helps fight the villain team and shit.

Green/Gary and Silver were exactly what rivals are supposed to be; confident in themselves, believe that they will be the best and pushes you to imrpove.

None of these 'friendly' rivals have ever presented a challenge. Never feels satisfying to beat them either.

I thoroughly enjoyed how not-annoying they were, how you fought and talked with them so often, and, best of all, how they had interesting development. Cheren had a clear goal (becoming the champion), but didn't know what he would do afterward or what that goal really meant to him. Bianca didn't know what she wanted to do, but in the middle of the game, she realizes that she should live in the now, enjoy and learn, and use the experiences she has to determine what her goals should be.

Silver was awesome.
Easily the most mysterious and with the most interesting backstory.
Stole his Pokemon from the professor.
Helps fight Team Rocket.
So he's okay with stealing mons but doesn't like TR.
Really interesting gray area.
Then they continue to develop his story in Gen III and even into Gen IV.
He's Giovanni's son. Giovanni left him after Red defeated him in Gen I. Now he hates Team Rocket.
Probably the most interesting story in the franchise.

His mom calls you sweetie because you're like another child to her, their little brother looks up to you like another sibling. Battles evil team with you, gives advice and helpful items, maybe tags along through a few spots in the game.

Just met her when you're getting your first Pokemon, acts polite upon first meeting you, from the big city in the region, tells you to pick first. After you pick your friend goes to pick but the jerk rushes ahead and picks the one strong towards yours "Since you picked that one, I'll pick this one then." Gets a good team, belittles you everytime you battle. You meet her parents in the big city, they're always busy and barely say two words except something about expecting excellence, giving some reasoning towards her actions. Begrudgingly compliments you after you beat them with a full 6mon team at the end of Victory Road. Also hot as hell.

Hugh is objectively the worst rival yet. Barry is a close second. Both are insufferably written.

Best rival is easily Gary. He's always one step ahead and smug about it; perfect sort of person that you really want to stick it to. Shiruba was a decent second place, being a dick and raising a good team (bonus points for being a simple smash'n'grabber), but honestly his whole schtick about

It never felt we were rivals at all. He already had pokemon before you get one, he isn't doing the gym challenges and overall theres no reason to fight bar sparring.

His team is a retread of Cheren and Biancas which doesn't really work because their teams were supposed to reflect your own. (I.e keeping a monkey).

Barry, Gary and Silver all actively wanted yo kick your ass. So kicking theres is satisfying.

I wish the dex rivalries get deeper, especially now with dexnav

Rivals have to be cocky otherwise it's not a rival. I understand they won't make a Green/Silver clone each generation but at least don't call them rivals since all they do is sucking your cock until the end of the game

Ambush players, showing up with changing teams every fight, names all of his 'mons after himself (eg. Ronald's Best, Ronald's Great, etc.). He shows up with a 6-mon team on first ambush, has fully-evolved trade evos on the second, all of his team knows Hyper Beam/Giga Impact on the third, waylays you in front of the Pokemon League with Pokemon with levels hard-coded to be +2/+3/+4 of your highest-leveled the moment you step out of Victory Road. All of his Pokemon always have fuck-you moves that don't match their type (Earthquake/Ice Beam/Thunderbolt on anything that can learn it, etc.)

And every time you beat him, he'll laugh it off, refuse to pay out a single cent, and use Fly. Even in the Elite 4.
