thinking of picking up Animal Crossing: New Leaf.

What do you in Animal Crossing, exactly?

Is it like Sims where you just control people or is there some kind of story given objective?

Firstly, this isn't /v/, fuckface.

You try to upgrade your house, catch all the fist and insects, get all the fruit, design your own clothes, get your ideal town with your favorite villagers, whatever. You set your own goals. You can range anywhere from hardcore play everyday to achieve your plans, earning as many bells as possible, to relaxing, play at your own pace style. The holidays and seasons are great, as well as visiting your friends' towns and seeing the villagers behave.

I play the game pretty intermittently, but it's worth the money, especially if you have a friend who owns the game.

It's not very similar to the sims, as you aren't playing some sort of god character. The only real parallels are decorating your house.

You collect furniture to create a home that pleases you.
You catch fish/bugs and collect fossils/art to fund what you want or fill a museum.
You can get creative and customize yourself or the entire town you are the mayor of.
Content is drizzled over the course of the year, to keep the new factor going long term.
There is multiplayer to visit other people for inspiration.

All of the games mechanics are optional because the game has no end phase and you take the game as far and in any direction you want as long as you have interest in it.

Animal Crossing is a game where you, a human character, move to a new town filled with nothing but walking and talking animals to become their mayor.

You start off slow and small with a shitty house and in a shit load of debt. So you do basic tasks like walk around town, picking up weeds, talking to your townsfolk, and participating in events.
You also do different odd jobs for cash, like selling bugs or fish you catch in the game. You do all this specifically to cater to your town. What you want to do is make your villagers happy, and just buy different things for your house, like furniture and paintings.

There is no end game to it, it's a game that goes on forever. You want to make sure you're playing it daily, though, or your favorite villager may one day disappear and move out of fucking nowhere and then you'll be sad and not want to play anymore.
