I'm fine with this. The problem with gen 6 having 70 Pokemon is that they sacrificed potential new Pokemon in favor of shitty megas, but regional variants actually look cool so I'm fine with that.

The Alolan forms are regional variants. A Vulpix from Kanto will not evolve into a Alolan Ninetales.

The problem for me is that I actually like a lot of megas but because they couldnt be wild encounters the region felt really lacking of new pokemon. This fixes it, plus they're endearing like Mega Slowbro

It's a much better compromise than having the megas to tell the truth.

Also if you can cross breed between regional variants than it works wonders for the meta-game.

As a matter of fact they should retcon the megas immediately into either legit evolutions or regional variants right now. It will save a lot of trouble in the future installments.

yeah, that's how they make pokemons each gen, by tweaking roles and tropes used in older games. See : regional bird, regional roddent, version specific duos, semi legendary dragon, and so on.
