So, since the Alola season will likely be more about exploration and completing the trials rather than getting to the Pokemon League, do you think Ash has a higher chance of winning the league this season?

Remember, its already been said that winning a league is only one step in becoming a master. He'll win the kalos league, and then head to Alola for the next step.

Didn't the leaker say something about the story revolving around sort of setting up a league?

Considering Ash is already confirmed to travel with Mallow, it could definitely just be Diantha or somebody recommending him to set up the league in Alola after he wins the league, roping in Mallow to be the first leader(she travels with him to help convince the others), while he takes on the island trials.

His victory is all but confirmed now.

The lack of Gyms and a Pokémon League in Kalos is probably the reason the writers were finally allowed to let him win the Kalos League in the first place, since it was his last chance (unless Gyms come back in Gen 8, but it's still too soon to think about that).
