It always irks me when people absolutely insist that anime characters are TRUE and HONORABOO JAPARESE, when half of all anime characters are designed looking white as fuck with colorful (and often just straight-up blonde) hair. A LOT of eastern shit is European-inspired too.
Whenever anime DOES have explicitly Japanese characters, they're usually really obvious, with slanted eyes, japanese clothing, ect. Otherwise, the simplistic artstyle just makes them white-skinned, with no defining traits to push any specific ethnicity on them.
It's also why Pokémon stopped making characters/locations real-world specific, as to avoid alienating the huge western audience it amassed. Kanto was the only Region named exactly after its real-world inspiration, and there's no visual difference in design between the Unova, Kalosian, and Kanto/Johto/Hoenn/Sinnoh characters. Aside from more blacks in Unova, and the obviously asian Kimono girls in Johto, the majority of characters across all the Pokémon games have the generic white anime character template.
