Also 6 chances to make another Greninja level marketing tool for themselves. It's a great idea for a number of reasons, let's them experiment with starter final form types knowing that people won't be forced to use it if they don't like it.
One branch could just keep the standard typing pretty much or get a fairly mundane second type like previous starters. Then the other branch could get something a little stranger like ghost or dragon, the drawback being you have to wait until later in the game to get it.
