If Alela Ninetales is Ice/Fairy does that mean she is finally going to be retconned to Fire/Fairy?

Sandslash is completely different. He's not really steel he just becomes hard like steel.

I get fire changing to ice but how does regular Ninetales suddenly become a fairy out of nothing?

This. If anything ninetales should be fire/ghost, but fixing that now would be arbitrary. While we're at it, some literal fairies should get retyped, I.e. Celebi, jirachi, manaphy. Never gonna happen tho

It's always this same mistake. I think it's pretty clear by now that all the Pokémon types can be purely "elemental" too, even the ones that supposedly describe what a creature "is", like Dragon, Bug, Ghost and Fairy. See: Oricorio. It is a Ghost element creature without literally being a ghost itself.
