Not catching them all puts you at a serious disadvantage competitively though. Trust me, it's a lot easier to make a competitive team every gen with a living dex.

And "catching them all" isn't some kind of impossible task. It only took me a few months, starting from scratch after my 3ds was stolen with my living pokedex inside it.
Granted, many of those months were spent happily replaying the older titles with some specific "grocery lists" of pokemon that I needed to catch, evolve, or breed, but here I sit, 715 banked pokemon, with a nice fat shiny charm and a living pokedex, and a healthy respect for many pokemon I never knew the greatness of.
