Gen 4 introduced wireless battling/trading without an external peripheral as well as battling/trading over Wi-Fi. Also Infernape was one of the coolest starters and Cynthia is the best champ.

Other than muh piano and atmosphere, Gen 4 was a mess. It's the lack of fire types, it's like they didn't think the type fit in with the color scheme or something.

Honestly I think gen 4 was the last good gen. Big region, lots of pokemon choices, a story/villain that wasn't completely retarded, and I had fun playing it. 5 had a lot of... questionable... design choices, 6 was too simple and seemed like the story thrown together in a hurry and tacked on after the fact, and 7 is looking hopeful but I'm going to reserve any actual judgement until I actually play it.

Gen 4 had the best grass starter anyways.

I remember I picked Piplup first back in Pearl but couldn't find a very good use for his Steel typing. The only non-HM move I remember using on him was Aqua Jet. Any recommendations for next time?

In Gen 4, Flash Cannon, from the Canalave Gym, will work on Empoleon as well, not to mention it being a Special Steel-type attack. Its Special Attack is the higher attacking stat of the two, so, outside of clinching first hit, yours is actually fighting at a disadvantage if Aqua Jet (which is Physical) is its strongest move.

Brine, Bubblebeam, Surf, Ice Beam, Blizzard, the usual moves. It learns the first two by level up anyways. But if you don't want to use TMs and are looking for a dedicated Steel-type attacker, though, you're better off searching for other options.

The starters were one of the few good things. Torterra is totally rad; I always wanted an anklyosaurus. Typing's cool even if it's bad in the meta. Togekiss is cool too. But the rest is pretty boring. Actually, gen III wasn't that great either, but gen V and VI brought it back. High hopes for Alola too.

I'd say it started at gen 5 where they tried so hard to recreate gen 1

Not any more than previous widespreadmons.

I can't dispute these two, though. Swinub/Snorunt should have been regular encounters since D/P, and the Fire distribution was really fucked in the Sinnohdex until Platinum not only made Magmar capturable instead of locking it behind both post-E4 and dualslot mode with LeafGreen, but also put Houndour in a location impossible to miss.
