>>27597679What I'm guessing is that the artists all drew up a shitload of design concepts back in the day, then kept the designs that didn't make it so they could improve on them and use at a later date. I mean, it makes sense in my opinion. During the initial design process you usually doodle up a small number of designs, show the rest of the staff, then they tell you which one they like the most and what they think might make it better. You go back and forth until the majority agree on the design then it's finalized. Plus, I'm sure they came up with a load of whacky or super-stylised designs, but had to time them down due to technical limitations.
These are all 100% guesses though and I'm basing them off "past experience". That experience being I helped with a small game project back years ago, and this is the process me and the artists went through. We all hoarded our original sketches and of course wished the designs we personally liked the most could be used, but since the majority voted on different ones, had to improve of them instead.
