Eh not really. There's a fuckton of areas that you can access in each area before progressing. As well as actual side quests.

The biggest problem was the Pokemon placement. Every trainer had those fucking monkeys or a Woobat and I couldn't get the cool birds, like Braviary, until after the Elite 4. There are designs I like (Krookodile, Haxorus, Emolga, Leavanny etc) but there are some really crap ones like Vanniluxe, the Simi's and Klinklang that appear with undue frequency.

I don't think that's it, though it does feel like a bit of a clusterfuck with all the different biomes.

Now that I'm thinking about it, I feel like it's because it's highly linear as you playthrough, but then feels disjointed in the post game (when you get to traverse full circle) because of the annoying cave positioning
