People still play it, for fun, and for nostalgia.
Many things in the series have changed since then. Like for example, the existence of AMUT or Anti-Mute, a spell that provides immunity to Silence, not actually curing it.
This doesn't mean we all stand on pedestals attacking FF1 for being dumb in comparison to newer games in the series.
We call it outdated and play it in novelty.
It's not that hard. Put Red in a GBA SP. Pick Squirtle, play a little (since clearly Charmander is too hard of a starter for your sensitive feelings). You'll find it's stupid, slow, and a completely inferior game.
You'll also find it's playable, fun, and still Pokemon. No one here actually thinks Gen 1 was the best gen, so stop throwing hissy fits every time someone hints at enjoying an old video game.
