Actually think about your team for a minute, use TMs and use X items in major battles. Blastoise can single-handedly own late game with proper items.

For Brock either evolve that Metapod or catch Mankey/Nidoran(M).

With some grinding (Caterpie to Metapod in Viridian Forest and Squirtle in Digglet's Cave) I was able to get my team to 43-47 levels and win League (with Pikachu and Butterfree on team).

Anyway, yeah definitely make sure you grab a nidoran. Makes the whole thing a lot easier. But honestly anything other than Pikachu will do the job.
