Or is his secret evolution and the shared secret two different things?
I'm thinking if they are the same secret, maybe his evolution is based on which starter you pick? Like he leaves your side when you evolve him. Maybe like he gets jealous of your starter, goes off to think about it and how he can better himself and ends up either becoming something like it/typing. Water/grass/fire. Or he becomes the type strong against your starter.
