Just got my shiny darkrai in platinum last night after a nasty long 20,000+ SRs. Which came after a nasty 16,000+ RE for an unown. Currently hunting Groudon in HG and Tepig in BW. Praying my luck returns, because going over double full odds TWICE was painful.

What gen do you hunt in? If in 6th gen, especially with the shiny charm, that makes sense. I assume you're hunting in HGSS for articuno, since the birds in XY are locked. Any gen before 6 has 1/8100 something odds. Getting it anywhere under 6000 would make you very lucky.

i've hunted in every gen beyond 3, although i only have seven shinies with the full 1/8192 chance and seven with 1/4096

don't use shiny charm, making it easier is no fun. it's like buying a rare baseball card from somebody who doesn't know what it's worth

I think probably 9 or 10 by now. But I have like 60 or something battle ready pokemon (not shinies) so got most of my shinies during EV training.

So what's the best strategy for catching a shiny legendary? I'm debating if I should bring it to 1 HP and count how much PP it uses, or leave it at 30-40 in case it struggles.

It has 65 PP so I'm not too worried, but I'd really rather not catch it in a master ball. They're ugly.

At 30-40% it's about 1.2% chance to catch, at 1 HP it's around 1.5%.

I've Masuda'd about 17 Shinies and SR'd for about 7 or 8 of them, eventually I got tired and decided to learn how to RNG abuse in 4th gen (haven't tried 5th gen yet). It's a shame that it's not possible in gen 6. Perhaps maybe gen 7 will be different though.
