Usually I see a general here, but not today.
I dropped the game during high school, around the furious fists set I think? But I want to get back into it. I already know plenty about how competitive decks work and all that good stuff, but I want to figure out what I should buy. Of course, nothing wrong with regular discussion about the game.

Rotation happens at the end of this month. We're losing XY, Flashfire, Furious Fists, and Phantom Forces, as well as a chunk of the XY promos. It's hard to say what the next format's going to look like, since most of the current meta comes or involves those four packs.

It's estimated that you get one UR (read: EX card) every 5-6 packs and a holo rare every 2-3 packs.

So let's say you want to make a deck around Aegislash EX, to use a random example. You need 4x Aegislash EX for this deck.

Phantom Forces, the pack Aegislash comes in, has 13 URs in it. This means that you have a 7% chance to pull ONE Aegislash every 5-6 packs of Phantom Forces. And you need four of them.

Meanwhile, you can trade two packs for an Aegislash on public. Opening packs will always end in tears.

You can trade for a full Tier 1 deck with 10~20 packs, not counting Shaymin EX.

Generally most decks use the same trainers because they keep getting reprinted.

The baseline is usually like 3-4 Sycamore, 1-3 N, 4 Ultra Balls, 3-4 Vs. Seeker, and stuff like that.
Most Pokemon/types have their own specific support or type support. Like Dive Ball, Level Ball, spirit links, and stuff like that which you have to account for and wouldn't use in any deck.

AZ and Scoop Up both do that, but they're rotating out. You also have Devolution Spray.
Wobbu/Bats is mostly dead once Crobat rotates out.
Meowstic EX is an irredeemably bad card.
Porygon-Z is better for a meme deck with something like Milotic PRC. Use it to recycle cards like Hammers, then mill your opponent out.

What are the guarantees of a booster box? Does every box have a guaranteed secret rare, x amount of ultras/supers/foils?

And what's a good trade for Keldeo-EX? I checked the trades and a bunch of packs are being offered, even 16 at a time. I don't bother with trades, so I don't know what to keep an eye out for.

Literally no guarantees. You have a chance of pulling literally nothing.
The ratios in >>27669775 are true for boxes. A box should get you 5-9 holo rares, 4-5 Breaks/EXs (1-2 of which might be FA), and SRs are 1 per 2 boxes. But those are ratios, not guarantees.
If you're worried about value, don't be. Chances are you'll pull at a loss from a box, mainly because Pokemon doesn't have money cards like in YGO/MTG/etc. Your goal is to break even.
If you're looking for specific cards for a deck, ALWAYS buy singles.

It's just like with the GTS or any MMO trade forum. Any trades you see posted are probably SHIT, because good trades are going to be taken instantly. No one's going to let a good trade actually sit for more than an hour.
Post your own trades.
Regular Keldeo EX should be 2-4 packs.

Secret rares are 1 in 2 boxes.

Holo rares are 9 in 1 box.

If you open a case (6 boxes).

You end up with 3 Secrer Rares, 18 Ultra Rares and 54 holo rares.

I didn't see that post, sorry about that. I'm not really concerned at all about the value, I just like collecting stuff from the sets. I've just never really thought about the guarantees though. I've opened about 4 booster boxes, it's just something me and my gf always wanted to do as kids and enjoy it regardless of the content, we add more to our collection and play against each other with stupid decks. We've always ended up with a secret rare, so I thought it might just be a thing every box has.
Halfway through a Steam Siege box at the moment, and have a couple of BREAK cards (I think they're ugly as fuck, but whatever), and only one EX, which is Mega Gardevoir, and about 6 holos. We haven't opened a box, or even a single pack, since Dragons Exalted. Have there been any particularly good sets since then? Considering an Elite Trainer box too.

The rules are exactly the same, there are just a few new types of cards.
The cards aren't "banned" so much that Pokemon's been using a rotation system like MtG's. The first rotation was in 2001 right after the Gen II Neo series, and it's been yearly since then.

There's an official online client with a tutorial and AI opponents, and a very active online community. Available on PC and tablets:

It's F2P, but it's very consumer friendly and you can get up to speed for free quickly if you know what you're doing. If you've played other online card games like Hearthstone, Pokemon blows its payment model out of the water.

There's also a free fan-made client with all the cards:

But it's very janky, relies on you knowing what you're doing, and is practically dead. While the official client has something like 40k players, there are currently 6 games active on TCGOne.

If you need help, there's normally a TCG general up when S&M news doesn't bump it off the board. Ask here/there. We need posts.

How to progress in PTCGO, tl;dr edition:
