Crystal is special in that its the only game with sprites with smears no puppet animation.

That being said, being rounded out as a 3D model really helps some pokemon, and put with some top-tier 3D animation, it looks really good.

I went back and fought Morty a bunch trying to notice it, but it never happened. Gengar just wiggles it's legs and tail. I'm wondering if it's some frame thing that none of my systems or emulators have been able to pick up, because I've never seen it outside of the gifs here and on Bulbapedo.

2nd gen and 4th gen had the best sprites.

Stadium/Colosseum models were shit but had a ton of personality to them, makes me sad that 6th gen models just kinda stand there. Though many 6th gen models are top tier.

Garchomp has looked great in every game. I think his XY model is the best, though.

I just wish idle animations looked a bit more like "ready to battle" and less like "Idle overworld". Garchomp's model looks imposing as fuck but he's just kinda standing there and occasionally doing his loop.

I dunno dude, he looks pretty goofy in 3D. It's mostly the way his head looks in relationship to his body. Pic related is the best one for me.

A lot of the 3D models look passive as fuck and it annoys the hell out of me. Scizor supposed to be twitchy and ready to fight, but now he just looks bored.

Yeah, but I only saw the back sprite 90% of the time so it's the most memorbable. Those badass red eyes and expression. Sucks too, because Typhlosion was my favourite starter but the 3D models made him not even my favourite Johto starter anymore.

He probably means the color scheme makes it look as if punching it would make you go through him.
Gengar in later renditions makes him look much more solid due to its new color scheme.

Gen 1 has a lot of personality for some of it's sprites. I like to equate them to a child's middle school sketches. Lot of fun to look at but not all that masterfully made.

That being said, I love this Grimer, he is having a good time.

And Dragonite here with his menacing "on my way to fuck your bitch" look in his eyes. For such a goofy looking pokemon he looks sort of badass and intimidating here.

Very fitting for what was essentially a "boss" pokemon back in Gen 1's Elite 4 with Lance's cheating Dragonite.

Yeah desaturating him really made him look unhealthy compared to his old palette.

This slowpoke though, fuck that's an amazing pose. The only thing I miss about the switch to 3D is the loss of personality some of the more sedentary pokemon had with their new battle idles.

It had the classic and awesome looking bit graphics combined with looped animation like an old rpg

Then 3D came
I appreciate it for Amie more than anything really

Even then they need to make an app or fix go so it can be a pokéwalker and have amie built in also

you're not wrong but the original r/g sprite is so unsettling and is one of the few sprites that conveys gengar's size (almost 5 foot tall)

The angle it was portrayed at made it look a lot more menacing/intimidating than it does in pretty much every other incarnation. I don't actually hate the shift to 3D but Gen 6 made everything seem more static in battle.

On the contrary. I feel like 3D models make it feel more dynamic. One of the main reasons I got sucked into Pokemon again after dropping it after playing White, was how great the battles felt in full 3D.
