Not only that, but Ho-oh was officially revealed in Japan before the anime even aired. There's an old-ass Japanese magazine scan that gets posted around here from time to time that's something to the effect of "8 things to look forward to in Pokemon" that has a blurb about the upcoming anime, Ho-oh's Sugimori art mentioning Pokemon 2, and the TCG. (along with 5 things I don't remember)

I don't think a lot of people realize how how quickly Japan started getting information about Gold and Silver. Ho-oh had already been revealed for months by the time the anime debuted. Hell, the infamous "proto-Tyranitar" magazine is from the very same month that the anime aired in Japan.

Kurusu is basically an unevolved Samurott, while Honoguma looks like an unevolved Typhlosion. I don't think we'll ever see them, they most likely scrapped their design to build other pokemon

gamefreak has said multiple times that they save designs for a very long time. Cubchoo was designed during the gen 2 batch, but they never added it until they could make the nose drip look good with sprites.

They have a literal warehouse of beta designs.

If it means we get Crystal Onix it's not so bad, really. I'd still prefer we get Alolan forms for other gens but I know how Game Freak is so I'm not really expecting much. And fuck even if something else does get a form it will probably be Lucario that gets it because of the furpandering.

It's clear that from the way they cut the animation in the trailer that normal Pika doesn't evolve into Alola Raichu.
Same goes for the others.
They can battle Pokémon in the game that don't match their Alola counterparts, for the sake of keeping information.
