like wtf is the significance of the symbols on the body of the Cradily line? or the Hoenn trio? Claydol line? Zangoose and Seviper? Lati twins? Why does Camerupt have those stupid rings on its body and why does Sharpedo have that cross on its forehead?
I'll tell you why, because the artists realized their designs were on the bland side and they wanted them to stand out. the correct approach was to add more detail, or possibly redesign them.
I mean, non of them were hideous (that came later) but it did set the stage for lowered standards and a more childish approach. and that's a slippery slope towards the yokai watch abyss
