Mega's were bittersweet; In order to make the drawbacks worth it the Pokemon needed boosts on top of their existing stats which is not good for power creep and made using Mega's in game boring as shit. That and having the changes be temporary is not particular fun IMO and more laborious than anything.
Regional forms allow them to rework a Pokemon from the ground up rather than building on top of it. Maybe sandslash will be a special attacker? Maybe exeggutor will be be a defensive behemoth?
Either way I for one hope never to see Mega's again.
