Gen V is exactly how every Pokemon game should be done. Completely new region, characters, and Pokemon, with direct sequels to expand on the region and story instead of slightly enhanced remakes.

Too bad GF will never do it again. Enjoy every game in the series being slightly altered copies of X/Y for the rest of time.

Every generation has their duds, but GenV clearly had a lot more than average. The starters didn't "wow" me either as I typically box them for better pokemon of the same kinds.

This. Sun/Moon looks great, don't get me wrong, but both it and X/Y reek of Genwunner pandering when it comes to their Pokemon designs whereas Black/White only had subtle references to it at best.

All the Gen V talk has given me an idea, what if GF made a game called Pokemon World Tournament for the NX and/or Wii U that would basically be a spiritual successor to Pokemon Stadium 2/Revolution but uses the BW2 PWT as the base.

Essentially a console version of PWT that includes trainers and pokemon for all 7 Gens. You can transfer in your Pokemon from Gen 6, 7 or Bank. In game trainer customization like Revolution, all the Gym leaders and Champions get models to stand behind their Pokemon. Would be the game of my dreams

I will never understand the hate for Gen V.

I started with gen 1 and I absolutely ADORE gen V. because it feels like a throwback, but modernized and done right, new ideas, but the same kind of feeling. Something I feel gen 3 and 4 just didn't capture as well.

5 is easily my favorite. it added a lot of thing that people wanted for ages. Unlimited TMs, Animated sprites, More post game content, And the sequels added stuff like PWT which gave it tons of replayability and longetivity.

And this is where I will ask, why? Personally, V is my favorite dex. And I was like you once. When Gen V was first announced, I loathed the idea because i thought "How are they gonna top god? Are they going to go the yugioh demi-god route?" When I went to the B/W mall tour here in CA 5 years ago, I saw all the leaked designs and instantly fell in love with more then half the dex. As much as I like gen 4, I get sad everytime I replay them because I realize i can't have my favorites like Galvantula, Golurk, Cofagrigus, Klingklang, etc.

I'll admit some designs like vaniluxe are weird, but i'd hardly call them bad. If anything they're remeniscent of Gen 1, Magnemite/Klink, Dugtrio/Vanilluxe Trubbish/Grimer etc.

In a way, Gen V felt like a reboot of Gen 1, but with new ideas and designs, first gen to ever feature a non-regional pokedex and actually encourage using the new regions mons over fan favorites.

I'm playing through B2 for the first time right now, just got to reverse mountain and this game is already 10/10 so far.

I LOVE french culture and was excited as hell for Gen VI and team flare when it was first announced, but they dropped the ball HARD. Kalos is the blandest most forgettable region i've ever played in, I can't even for the life of me remember more then 2 gym leaders, the electric kid clemont and the faerie chick Vivian. Thats it.

Team flare was an unbelievable let down, I was expecting Team rocket french mafia 1800's style and instead I got a bunch of bumbling idiots "WHO YOU, WHO YOU WHO ARE YOU?!" who have NO idea why they joined the team other then to be trendy hipsters and "in" with the cool kids.

And the Lysandre was typical "Genocidal maniac" villain to the point it was so cliched and overdone after Cyrus and every other anime/game villain.

I really hope VII steps it up, because right now ANYTHING is better then the steaming pile of lost potential known as X/Y.

Oras was mediocre, but bearable.

This is exactly how I felt. Gen 5 is the true 3rd Pokemon series for me. It's hard to describe. Gen 3 felt like a firm, swift kick in the balls, while Gen 4 was slowly grinding the heel down on your balls. Gen 5 came out of nowhere and made everything right again.

I feel you on the Pokemon designs too. They have their own style, yet still feel like they have an appropriate continuation from the general feel of gen 1/2. Opposed to Gen 3's Pokemon, most of which felt like discarded background characters from Sonic X or that MegaMan NT cartoon. I want and expect each generation to have their own style, but I just did not like the style of Gen 3 at all.

When playing through 3,4, and 6, very few of the new Pokemon made me want to catch them. Contrast to 5, the majority of the new Pokemon warranted a "woah that's pretty cool!" and trying to work out if I could find spot for it on my team.

X and Y didnt do Gen 5 justice. Black and White could have been a lite-reboot of the franchise, adding on to the tone and setting of Unova, while still adding new regions, new pokemon, etc. the games were a love letter to RBY, it felt like a new start to the series, only new pokemon to encounter felt like a new journey, and the attempt they made to make the gen 5 pokemon established on their own was a great idea, but fell flat because older fans felt alienated. the genwunners should have embraced black and white, it's the closest thing we've had to reviving the feeling the original games gave us, instead they complain because it didnt have older mons readily available. it could have been a great turning point in the series, instead they pandered to gen 1 instead of making a new gen 1. B/W was the reboot the fans needed, but not the ones we deserved.

I tend to think of Gen III and IV as KOTOR II and Gen I and II as KOTOR. Both have great stories, debatable as to which was better, but the mechanics improved so much that it's hard to justify choosing the older games as the superior ones.

I heard anon said HGSS sucked. I don't know about that, but FRLG was definitely a good game.

I will admit that I haven't played BW2, which I'm told was a vast improvement in most every way. I personally liked the music I heard, liked the World Championship or whatever it was called, and definitely liked the anime trailer for it.

But BW was not good. It was boring. It was a drag to play. It was difficult to play—I chose Snivy as my starter, and getting through the early part of the game was harder than it needed to be because GF didn't give it enough options; not even Serperior was good until Contrary finally came out. When I got to Ghetsis, I had a tough time, because he had an impossible Hydreigon, whereas I had to use all of my rare candies/ show favoritism to my Druddigon in order to get it evolved in time, which left my time unbalanced and unprepared.

I don't know why other people hate it really, but for me, I was not into it from the very beginning.

I really don't see how. It had obvious parallels to gen one but the designs are so drastically different that you can't even visually compare them besides some thematic elements they share. They're just throwbacks, not entire ripoffs. It's like saying they jumped the shark in gen 2 because they introduced regional birds. Not to mention that you've posted about 25 Pokémon (counting evolutions) out of 156. Gen V had some great designs despite that anyway.

On the topic of it being difficult, my main point is that the game was unbalanced, unlike, I feel, the previous two games were. BW started the trend of the "best/good" starter—the idea that you had to pick a specific starter if you wanted the best chance of beating the game. This sort of elitism is why the Pokemon metagame gets stale—people are unwilling to give the little guy a chance and only use what has been considered proven or the strongest. There isn't a single game in which your starters even remotely affect the difficulty of the game. Hell, you can abandon your starter almost straight away to get one of the three monkeys. It's difficult to believe someone over the age of 18 can genuinely complain about the difficulty of a Pokémon game, especially when everything dies in one hit if you take advantage of type weaknesses. They're the same group of people that tote OoT and SM64 as the pinnacle of gaming - but fortunately for Mario and Zelda, they stayed pretty consistent so nostalgiafaggots at least enjoy every game in those series but no one likes NSMB.
Pokemon on the other hand, is a wild rollercoaster of quality. You get shitty games like RS then the actually decent Emerald, then back to shit with DP, then Pt and HGSS, and it goes on and on. People who got turned off by RS, and there's a lot of em, never played the actual good games in the series so they believe that everything after Gen I or Gen II MUST be shit. Then they look at the newer Pokemon and immediately hate it, party due to the fact that they already have the idea that Pokemon nowadays sucks, and partly due to the fact that it's a gut reaction to something foreign. Unlike Mario and Zelda, Pokemon is more focused on designs and judging aesthetic qualities is not something you need to play the game in order to do.

This was a good thing, in my opinion. Gen V Pokémon still felt important but you had the option to not use any of them if you didn't feel like it. Pander too much to one gen and then you get Pokedexes like Gen 2 and 6 where no-one remembers the new Pokémon thanks to all trainers using older ones.

Gen V had some simple relatively realistic designs like Braviary, Krookodile, Sawsbuck, Bouffalant, Tirtouga, Galvantula etc. that were easy on the eyes. Fucking Gen V, man what a ride. I really don't give a damn about the story in Pokemon games, nor so I want some generation spanning ploch,but the only real complaint I can mutter about it on a whole is that they didn't execute B2W2 with it as a continuation in mind, so any open threads were left ambiguously open and never really went anywhere. Other then that, these games are the peak of Pokemon, that entire run from 2008 to 2012 was wall to wall fuck my shit up senpai, and B2W2 has the crown.

-The region now has old Pokemon because the Poke Transporter fritz out in the BW post league.
-The new routes and dungeons all have great map design, especially route 24.
-The optional stuff to do besides the league are so many that it wasn't fucking funny. Magnemite chains for Join Avenue, completing Pokestar Studios, using the online portions to get all the medals, hidden grottoes, the PWT.
-Speaking a medals, its absolute bullshit that they aren't in game anymore and just online achievements. I was far more ingaged with having them in game, getting a gold medal case and pinning a a pretty difficult medal to the trainer card was bitching.
-Great new characters to bolster the old ones, and what new traits were given to older ones was pretty damn fun. Your old rival is now a gym leader! And your other friend is now the Professor's assistant! I also loved how Hugh got her old dex cquse she wasn't prepared to give a second one, and the in game commentary about how anyone can get one these days.
-Already godlike soundtrsck bolstered by even greater music. Stuff like Neo Plasma Battle, Colress VS, and VS Champion Iris is top tier Battle music in general.
-Again only thing bad with the games is that the story is not all there, and they did nothing with Alder's Grandson. Otherwise, perfection.
